New Year's Eve

It is a long-standing custom of Chinese Han folk to observe the New Year on New Year's Eve, commonly known as "boiling the New Year". New Year's Eve before New Year's Eve, folklore activities are mainly manifested as the lighting of the New Year's fire, Shou New Year's fire, that is, all houses are lit candles all over, the family gathered to welcome the New Year. On New Year's Eve, the candles are lit all night long, which is known as "shining the false consumption", and it is said that after shining the year, it will make the family rich in the coming year.

The custom of keeping watch over the New Year is also known as "boiling the New Year", Han folk have the custom of keeping watch over the New Year on New Year's Eve. The custom of keeping watch over the New Year is to stay up on the last night of the old year to welcome the arrival of the new year, also known as New Year's Eve, commonly known as "boiling the New Year". In ancient times, there are two meanings: the old man shou yi for "resignation of the old year", with the meaning of cherishing the time; young people shou yi, is to extend the life of parents. Since the Han Dynasty, the moment when the old and new years change is generally the midnight hour. On the night of New Year's Eve, both men and women, young and old, will be lit up and gathered together to observe the New Year. Therefore, keeping the New Year is one of the customs of the Spring Festival.


New Year's vigil was first recorded in the Western Jin Dynasty, when people lit candles or oil lamps and kept vigil all night. In Japan, Vietnam, Thailand and other Southeast Asian countries, all of which have been influenced by China, New Year's Eve is said to be observed.


New Year's Eve vigil is the most important New Year's Eve custom, which was recorded in the Wei and Jin dynasties. In the evening of New Year's Eve, the Chinese people still attach great importance to the New Year's Eve custom of keeping the New Year's Eve with the family and sharing the joy of family life. After the first crowing of the rooster, the new year begins, men, women and children are dressed in festive attire, first to the elders in the family to celebrate the birthday, and then go to friends and relatives to congratulate each other blessings. From the first to the 15th day of the Lunar New Year, people are immersed in a joyful, peaceful and civilized festive atmosphere.
